Your Guide

20 Years on These Rivers.

Jason Brininstool has called Missoula home for over 20 years and turned a lifelong obsession into a career. He knows every productive seam on the Blackfoot, every foam line on the Clark Fork, every run on the Bitterroot

What sets Jason apart isn’t just fish counts — it’s the combination of deep river knowledge, patient instruction, and genuine care for every client’s time on the water.

The Water

World-Class Rivers, Right Outside of Town

Three legendary drainages within an hour of Missoula. Jason knows them all — and knows which one is fishing best on any given day. Missouri River is over two hours away.

Bitterroot River

Home of the famous Skwala hatch. Braided channels, deep pools, and aggressive brown trout. Fishes well March through October.

Clark Fork River

The lifeblood of Missoula. Technical dry fly sipping in summer, aggressive streamer fishing in spring.

Blackfoot River

Made famous by A River Runs Through It. Fast, powerful, and beautiful. Our best summer dry fly water.

Missouri River

Tailwater fishing at its finest. Giant rainbows, technical dry fly hatches, and gin-clear water below Holter Dam. Worth every mile of the drive.

What Clients Say

Real reviews. Real clients. Real days on the water.

★★★★★

In 2022, I had a terrible ski accident that resulted in five orthopedic surgeries and two craniotomies. During my recovery, while dealing with poor balance and vestibular issues, a friend asked me to join him on a guided trip with Jason. Initially I was hesitant, but Jason assured me of my safety walking the riverbanks and getting in and out of the boat.

He taught me casting, mending, managing my line, setting the hook, and landing fish. Despite the limitations in my life at the time, Jason restored hope and joy. Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of floating the Missouri, Bitterroot, Blackfoot, and Clark Fork with him. He has become more than just my guide — he’s also my therapist. If you’re looking for a guaranteed catch, I highly recommend Jason. And if you’re seeking a therapist, the conversations we have on the boat are a free bonus.

I first fished with Jason on a Smith River float almost a decade ago. His passion, skill, good company, and patience have drawn me, my family, and friends back to Montana to fish with him several times a year ever since.

He’s helped me appreciate the special qualities of Montana’s rivers and community, and helped me chill out when I needed it most. Oh, and we’ve caught our fair share of gorgeous fish and shared some great music and laughs along the way. Cannot recommend him more — just don’t take my days!

Fishing with Jason these last 7 or 8 years has been a great experience. His knowledge of the rivers is obvious the moment you step in the boat. He reads the water and knows where the fish should be holding — and he’ll always emphasize: should be!

If one approach is not working, he quickly switches things up — tactics, flies, presentation — and it usually pays off. On top of that, he has a great sense of humor that makes the whole day relaxed and fun. I’ve caught lots of quality fish with Jason. Every time we land one he is just as excited as the last. Always an encouraging word if one slips away. Plan on a productive and enjoyable day on the water.

The Season Fills Up Fast.

Spring, early summer, and fall book out months in advance. During the warmest weeks — late July through mid-August — I run half days only to keep the trout healthy when water temps are at their highest. Don’t wait on dates!
