May 21, 2026 Bitterroot River
The River is Dropping Quickly....Very Close
River is in post runoff, but likely PMDs around and the occasional Bitterroot stone. Updated report coming next week….
May 21, 2026 Blackfoot River
Also Dropping Quickly.... and Very Close
The river is dropping and “greening” up. Should be a matter of days…and may already have legit shots to fish big bugs (salmonflies).
May 21, 2026 • Clark Fork River
Post Run Off, but Already Turning the Corner
Both the upper and lower Clark are dropping into shape, and the upper stretches have been fishing pretty well over the last couple of weeks. Already seeing robust PMD (pale morning dun) hatches, as well as the occasional golden stone and remnant “fluttering” skwalas from the Spring on warmer days. The dry fly eats aren’t happening on the regular, but they’re looking up in the right water. This is especially true when the PMDs show up and they’re already looking up to eat….but they’ll still eat a foam bug. Most of the action is underneath on PMD style nymphs (frenchies, yellowspot PTs, etc.), TJs, zirdles, etc.

Book Based on This Report
Post run off is pretty much done on our local freestones. Big bugs will be right around the corner. Unfortunately, I am personally booked up beginnning May 25th straight through to July 14, minus a random early June day and one late day in May. BUT, if you are looking to get on the water during the upcoming window I will do what I can to get folks lined up with a guide I trust. I will not just put a warm body in the rower seat simply to sell a day. If I have no one available, best bet is to look into the Fall, or start looking into next season!
